At a special ceremony in Washington DC on March 11, the U.S. State Secretary Hillary Clinton and first lady Michel Obama presented "International Women Courage" award to the prominent Uzbek human rights defender, independent journalist and former political prisoner Mutabar Tajibaeva.

Mutabar Tajibaeva, who is also a Nobel Prize nominee, spent over two years in jail in Uzbekistan for her human rights work and criticism of the authoritarian President Islam Karimov. In her remarks during presentation of the award, Ms. Tajibaeva said "Today, Uzbekistan is in a state of lawlessness. The judicial system is very weak. The authorities continue to practice widespread repressions, violence and torture."
"Human rights activists are systematically persecuted across the country. All of this results in shocking statistics on number of political prisoners and victims of torture in Uzbekistan, many of them are people who I know personally", she said.
Tajibaeva thanked the government of the United States for its support of freedom and human rights in Uzbekistan, and called for immediate release of remaining political prisoners.
Last year Tajibaeva won the French government's Freedom, Equality, Brotherhood Award and the internationally known Martin Ennals Award.
Tajibaeva was detained in October 2005 after criticizing Uzbek officials for the brutal military crackdown on a demonstration in the eastern Uzbek city of Andijon in which hundreds of people were killed.
In May 2006, she was found guilty of several crimes and sentenced to eight years in prison in a trial that violated virtually all possible fair trial standards. The Uzbek government released Tajibaeva earlier this year in an apparent attempt to please the Western countries.
Many American Uzbeks believe that is exactly the sort of leadership the nation needs from the current Obama administration if it is going to achieve long-term stability in Central Asia and restore its national image of a democracy-supporter.
Administration of President Obama must urge the government of Uzbekistan to release at least a dozen remaining human rights defenders and half a dozen critical journalists from prisons.
